Texas places more buoys along Rio Grande after Trump's inauguration
Shortly after President Donald Trump was sworn into office, Texas placed more buoys along the Rio Grande.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott posted video of the large buoys going into place at the Texas-Mexico border.
The buoys have previously been used as part of a state program to stop migrants from illegally crossing into Texas.
"I look forward to continuing to work closely with President Trump to secure the border," wrote the governor on social media. "AMERICA IS BACK!"
Texas, Biden Administration battle over buoys
The backstory:
The buoys were a point of contention between Texas and the Biden Administration.
The federal government sued Texas in 2023 to get the floating barriers removed, claiming it violated federal law.
A district court initially sided with the Biden Administration, but it was overruled by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
In November, Abbott announced that the state would expand the length of the floating barriers in Eagle Pass.
Gov. Greg Abbott sends letter to President Trump on border security
On Monday, Governor Abbott publicly shared a letter written to President Trump.
The letter congratulates the new president on his inauguration and urges him to take more action on the border.
At a speech on Monday, President Trump said that Governor Abbott had been doing a good job with handling the situation at the border.
What they're saying:
"Texas has fought to secure the border in the face of federal obstruction. I look forward to ending this crisis with your help," wrote Gov. Abbott.
Trump executive orders on border
On his first day in office, President Trump is expected to sign nearly a dozen executive orders addressing illegal immigration into the US.
During his inauguration speech, Trump promised to send troops to the southern border. Immigration lawyers say the troops will not be allowed to arrest anyone.
Another executive order would direct Homeland Security and the Department of Defense to finish installing sections of the border wall.
The president will also designate cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
