Police shot and killed a man who allegedly opened fire on officers after a chase through two counties.

The chase began just after 4 a.m. Tuesday when officers in Forney got a call about a suspicious car in the 700 block of Pinson Road.

Police said the driver refused to pull over for a traffic stop and took off. He led officers from several police departments through Mesquite and finally into southeast Dallas.

Officers with the Dallas Sheriff’s Office spiked the car’s tires on Riverwood Road, north of Interstate 20 and Dowdy Ferry Road.

Two women jumped out of the vehicle and were taken into custody. But police said when the driver got out he started firing at officers.

He was killed when officers from both the Forney and Mesquite police departments returned fire. No one else was hurt, police said.

Family members who showed up at the scene identified the dead man as 36-year-old Gary Wayne Jones. They said he lives in the area, had grown up on the same street he was shot dead on and one of the women in the car with him was his pregnant girlfriend.

A family member also said he was a good man and a great father who did not want to go back to prison. A search found that Jones had a record with Dallas and Mesquite police and had run from authorities in the past.

The Dallas Police Department has taken the lead on the investigation.
