Stolen shark doing well after being returned to San Antonio Aquarium

Police arrested two people for stealing a shark from the San Antonio Aquarium. They got away with it by stuffing the animal into a stroller.

Aquarium workers said the 16-inch horn shark named Miss Helen not only survived the ordeal but is in good health now. They said it’s remarkable considering this species of sharks can live about an hour out of water if they’re lucky.

The workers are now running tests on Miss Helen. They want to make sure she’s re-acclimated to the environment before they return her to her tank.

She’s usually in an interactive touch pool at the San Antonio Aquarium. That’s how the three thieves got to her. Surveillance video shows them staking out the pool on Saturday. Then one man grabs Miss Helen, wraps her in a towel and puts her in a stroller.

Police found the three suspects Monday night and returned Miss Helen to the aquarium. The two men are facing theft charges. It’s not yet clear if the woman seen with them will face charges as well.

“She’s a tough little horn shark, I’ll tell you that. I’m really proud of her and I’m so overjoyed to have her back,” said San Antonio Aquarium Assistant Husbandry Director Jamie Shank.

Police said the mastermind of the theft has several marine animals in his home.

Horn sharks are worth about $2,000.
