State Fair of Texas opens today

After you stuff your face with funnel cake and corny dogs, there are plenty of new rides and attractions for you to try at this year’s State Fair of Texas.

The fair gates officially open at 10 a.m. Friday and the annual opening day parade will roll through Downtown Dallas at noon.

The theme of this year’s fair is “Celebrating Texas Agriculture.” It’s a nod to the fair’s 130 years of tradition and its agricultural roots.

But there are plenty of new things too. There’s a new Taylor Swift exhibit in the Hall of State, Lords of Gravity Basketball Slam Dunk Show, gravity-defying Xpogo trick show, Clydesdales, neon Big Tex, three new rides for adults and, of course, lots of new foods.

On Friday night, Dallas Police Chief David Brown will speak at the opening ceremony at 7 p.m. at the Hall of State Steps. Then, Kacey Musgraves will be the first headliner.

The fair runs through Oct. 23.
