Police investigating aggravated sexual assault at Dallas park

Investigators are searching for the man who sexually assaulted a woman who was walking in a Dallas park late Friday night.

This was reported to police just after 11 p.m., when a woman said she was overpowered and sexually assaulted while walking the trails through Katie Jackson Park, in the 9100 block of Haverwood Lane.

The victim said she was walking through the park, when a man in a hoodie came up to her and started talking to her.

The man then overpowered her and sexually assaulted her, the victim told police. Police don't have much more than a vague description for the suspect.

The victim was taken to a hospital. Her condition was not known, but police said it did not appear she suffered life threatening injuries.

It’s unclear if the woman lived nearby, but people who live in the area said the park attracts people from all over the area.

Officers were seen canvassing the crime scene all day Saturday, backing up to woods, homes, and apartments.

"I saw police back in through the park here all throughout the day, so I wondered what was going on," Michael Van Boven said. "Obviously, never want that in your community."

Police stepped up patrol Saturday night of the park’s walking trail.

"As a woman, it’s something to be conscious of and be aware of," Rachel Melancon said. "It’s really unfortunate that no matter what time it is, bad things can happen."

District 12 Dallas City Council member Cara Mendelsohn told FOX 4 that area has been a focus spot for Dallas police, equipped with a crime response team.

Mendelsohn said even though this incident is alarming, crime has gone down in her district due to extra patrol from police in October and overnight watch from local marshals.

Police are reminding those living in the area to be alert and report any suspicious behavior.

Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 214-373-TIPS.
