A longtime Dallas police officer will be honored Wednesday for his work on and off duty.

Officer Brian Nolff is the Dallas Police Department’s Officer of the Year.

He is a neighborhood police officer who has been with the department of 28 years. He's also known for his efforts to collect shoes for needy children.

DPD said while on patrol one day, Officer Nolff noticed several kids in the neighborhood who weren’t wearing shoes. He started talking to his fellow officers and local businesses about a shoe donation drive.

Officer Nolff collected more than 650 pairs of new shoes kids at the “Share the Shoes” event in July.

“Parents were thankful and very appreciative of Officer Nolff’s hard work and dedication to making sure their children had comfortable fitting shoes to wear for the summer,” the police department said after the event.

He has also raised money to support the Dallas Police Honor Guard.
