North Texans provide overwhelming help for Harvey victims
North Texans are coming together to help the victims of Harvey.
Some people from the Houston area are also in North Texas doing what they can to help in Dallas.
The Trusted World drop off location at 15660 North Dallas Parkway has seen so many people dropping off items and offering help, it’s been tying up traffic.
Trusted World is the official nonprofit that is partnering with the Red Cross to accept North Texas Harvey donations.
“We started this Saturday morning,” explained Trusted World CEO Michael Garret. “People have shown up in droves. We've already filled this up three times."
Even one woman who can't get back to her home southwest of Houston stepped up to volunteer.
“I was getting frustrated about not being able to do anything,” said Sherri Scott from Sugar Land. “So I went shopping at Walmart and found this place. Dallas, you're so great.”
Churches are stepping up, too.
“All of us are pulling together. The government can only do so much,” said Prestonwood Baptist Church Pastor Jack Graham. “We believe Christians can make a difference in people's lives.”
On top of filling up a semi with donations, Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano is also training up volunteers to send out.
“We go with a message of hope even after the cameras are gone,” Graham said.
Even police are working to help their fellow first responders.
Sergeant Demetrick Pennie with the Dallas Fallen Officer Foundation is collecting new socks underwear and shirts to help officers working search and rescue operations. They’ll be accepting packages of new clothing for men and women in all sizes at its location at 1414 North Washington Avenue.
“A lot of these officers are wading in the water running these rescues,” he explained. “They are wet, staying overnight in third party locations. They don't have a change of clothes. They don't have socks to put on."
The Trusted World drop-off location will be open until 7 p.m. and is still accepting donations. Volunteers will return to help Wednesday.
