New concerns after 14th victim targeted in Oak Lawn

There are new concerns about safety in Dallas' Oak Lawn community after police confirm that a 14th victim was targeted over the weekend.

Police say around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, a 26-year-old man was approached in the 2700 block of Wycliff Avenue.

Police aren’t calling the incident an attack; instead, they’re calling it a terroristic threat.

Rafael McDonnell of the Resource Center learned of the incident at a community meeting Monday night with Dallas police.

“The attackers used a crowbar and the guy was able to survive by curling up in the fetal position and they ran away,” said McDonnell.

Police haven’t confirmed the use of a crowbar.

Longtime community member Keith Hess was also at the meeting and says he's frustrated by the situation, but said, “I was very impressed by what I heard.”

In addition to cameras going up recently, he says there's more going on behind the scenes.

“Of course on Cedar Springs, we have a lot of officers that are very visible, but I didn't realize there were so many undercover and on some of the side streets as well that are actually watching over us,” said Hess.             

But McDonnell worries about all the visitors heading to the area, ready to celebrate the holidays at neighborhood hot spots.

“They may not know what's been going on in this community and they may not be ready to take the increased personal security they need to be here, and that is one of those things that keeps me awake at night,” said McDonnell.

Police say they hope to have more information about the case after detectives have a chance to speak in depth with the victim.
