Mockingbird Pedestrian Bridge opens after numerous delays

A bridge connecting the Katy Trail to the White Rock Trail is finally opening.

The Mockingbird Pedestrian Bridge crosses over Mockingbird Lane just east of the Central Expressway in northeast Dallas. It has been in the works for years.

The project was initially approved in Dallas’ 2006 bond package but construction didn’t begin until 2013. There were unexpected delays along the way with land disputes and concerns over the design.

But leaders say the bridge is desperately needed. Over the years several pedestrians have been injured or killed trying to cross Mockingbird Lane. Southern Methodist University is also just a couple blocks away.

In addition to connecting the two trails, the bridge will let people safely cross the street to get to restaurants, retail shops, a movie theater and DART’s Mockingbird Station.
