IKEA breaks ground on new store in Grand Prairie

The Swedish retailer IKEA started work on its newest store in North Texas Tuesday morning.

The 290,000 square-foot store will be located on 30 acres along the east side of State Highway 161 and Mayfield Road, north of Interstate 20.

"This store will provide a more convenient IKEA shopping experience for current and potential customers throughout central and western parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex who maybe live too far from IKEA Frisco,” said Lars Petersson, IKEA U.S. president.

The Grand Prairie store will be similar to the Frisco store with three model home interiors, 50 room settings, a play area for children and a restaurant that serves Swedish specialties like meatballs.

The store is expected to open next fall and should employ about 300 workers.
