First part of Dallas's Tent City cleared
DALLAS - The first section of the area known as Tent City has been cleared out in Downtown Dallas.
Tent City is the homeless camp under the Interstate 45 freeway. The section that was shut down Tuesday at 9 a.m. is near Ferris and Corinth streets. It was cleaned up and barricades and fences went up to secure the area.
The Metro Dallas Housing Alliance has been working with people who have been living there to relocate. Officials say about 170 people still have to be moved out. The organization is also helping people with criminal records find second chance housing.
'Section E' is the next part the city will close. Officials say that section has more crime and may be more difficult to close.
The deadline to have the camp completely closed and everyone moved out is May 4.
