Denton considers decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana

The city of Denton may tell police to go easy on people who are caught with small amounts of marijuana.

The proposal would only apply to Denton police officers and allow them to ignore the possession of two ounces or less.

People could still face charges if the person is also accused of a felony or a violent crime.

"We must act now if we wish to live up to our city values of inclusivity and innovation. Make this a high priority. The public is watching," said Deb Armintor, a Denton city council member.

The council has taken no action yet, but the proposal will be discussed further along with the police chief.
