New Deep Ellum mural to feature Leon Bridges in Mavs jersey

A new mural will be unveiled in Deep Ellum on Friday to honor Dallas’ blues roots.

The mural features Grammy Award-winning soul singer Leon Bridges, who was raised in Fort Worth.

He was painted wearing the City Edition jersey he helped design for the Dallas Mavericks.

"The mural itself is obviously featuring Leon, as well as all of the giants of the shoulders that he’s standing on musically that have come through Deep Ellum and have history and legacy and just have roots here in Deep Ellum," said artist Jeremy Biggers. "Being able to feature Leon is something that is really cool and something that was really enjoyable to be able to have him and the history of Deep Ellum in one piece."

Biggers said the blue colors in the mural are also significant.

"I wanted to obviously speak to the blues history of Deep Ellum which is featured in the blue circle. But also that circle is representative of a lot of the things that I do in my personal works. And also the full circle moment of Leon even when he was already on and already Grammy nominated he was still coming back to Deep Ellum busking in the streets. So I wanted that full circle moment to feature in the work as well as a call back to the colors of the uniform and the jersey," he said.
