2 killed in head-on crash on southbound Central Expressway in Dallas

Portions of the Central Expressway in Dallas were closed on Tuesday morning because of a fatal, overnight head-on crash, officials said.

Wrong-way crash on North Dallas highway

What we know:

Several drivers called 911 early Tuesday to report a wrong-way driver traveling north in the southbound lanes of Central Expressway.

Dallas firefighters responded to the major crash in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 75, just north of Royal Lane, around 1:30 a.m.

First responders found a sedan that had collided head-on with an SUV. Firefighters had to extricate at least one person from the wreckage. 

The wrong-way driver in the sedan died at the scene. Two people in SUV were taken to the hospital, where the passenger died. The driver of the SUV remains in critical condition.

What we don't know:

It is unclear why the driver was traveling the wrong way.

The names of those involved have not yet been released.
