1 dead, 1 in critical condition, firefighter injured in Dallas duplex fire

One person was killed, another is in critical condition, and a firefighter was hospitalized after a garage fire spread, engulfing a duplex in Dallas early Monday.

What we know:

Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a 911 call at a one-story duplex in the 10600 block of Boedeker Street just before 6 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters found the fire in the garage at the back of the home. They immediately began battling the flames and conducting search-and-rescue operations.

Two residents were rescued from inside the home and transported to a local hospital. One resident was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other remains in critical condition.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital after sustaining a leg injury during the rescue. He's expected to make a full recovery.

Firefighters fought the flames from the outside, preventing it from spreading to the other side of the duplex or nearby homes.

Three residents from the other side of the duplex evacuated safely. The American Red Cross was called in to assist them.

What we don't know:

The fire started in the garage, but the exact cause remains under investigation.

The identity of the deceased victim has not yet been released.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office will determine that person's cause of death.
