The Dallas County District Attorney now says a man convicted of murdering a Dallas police officer should not be executed.

Juan Lizcano was sentenced to death for shooting and killing Officer Brian Jackson in 2005.

Lizcano’s attorneys argue he is intellectually disabled, which would make him exempt from the death penalty.

The DA’s office fought those claims for years but reversed course because of a recent Supreme Court ruling on a similar case.

Lizcano’s sentence could be changed to life without parole next week.
