Big turnout expected for Election Day on Tuesday

DALLAS - The 2016 presidential election season has already seen record turnout for early voters.

The Texas Secretary of State reports about 4.5 million voters in Texas cast their ballots early, either in-person or by mail. That’s 46 percent of registered voters in the state.

Locally, many North Texas counties have also experienced record turnout. 549,643 people voted early in Dallas County, compared to 443,907 in 2012. Tarrant County saw 515,230 early votes this year, and 418,878 in 2012.

Across the nation, about 28 percent of all registered voters voted early. That means nearly 40 million ballots have already been cast.

Elections administrators are anticipating high voter turnout on Election Day. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. There will be more polling locations than early voting, but long lines are still expected early and late in the day.

Many people who FOX 4 spoke to on Sunday said they are ready for this presidential election to be over.

"I think it's absurd,” said Amanda Hoddy, “It seems like it's more like childhood playground than a political arena most of the time."

Regardless of whether or not people are happy with the candidates, Jackie Steinbock said voting is a responsibility.

"Not voting to me is un-American. People have died for our right to be a free country and vote, so you should do that,” she said.
