7-year-old boy drowns in pool near grandfather's Hurst apartment

A young boy who was visiting his grandfather in North Texas drowned in an apartment complex pool over the weekend.

According to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, 7-year-old Levi Banks died Saturday after being pulled out of the pool at the Sawgrass Apartments on Sontogrande Boulevard in Hurst.

Fort Worth police told the Star-Telegram the boy was from Kansas City, Kan. He was in Hurst to visit his grandfather.

The family believes he sneaked out of the apartment early in the morning to go swimming alone, the newspaper reported.

Although the investigation is still ongoing, police do not expect to file charges. They called the boy’s death a tragic accident.

Tarrant County officials said they have seen a spike in childhood drownings this summer. More children drowned in the first few days of summer this year than all of 2017.

With so many drownings occurring in apartment pools, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas has started a safety campaign that provides free swim lessons at apartment complexes. For more information, visit www.ymcadallas.org.
