An 11-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy from Whitesboro were killed and a 4-year-old is in a medically-induced coma after a pickup truck slammed into the back of their family’s minivan.

Denton police said the accident happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday on Highway 380. The family in the minivan was stopped at the red light at the Mayhill Road intersection.

The driver of a Ford F-350 came up behind them at a high rate of speed and didn't stop in time. The impact pushed the van into another vehicle, police said.

Leslie De Luna and Edgar Carlos De Luna died at the hospital. Their brother, 4-year-old Juan Carlos De Luna, was also critically injured and is still in a medically induced coma at Children’s Hospital in Dallas.

Their mother and father, as well as the driver of the truck, suffered only minor injuries.

Police are still investigating the crash. They said the truck driver did not appear to slow down before the crash. Also, none of the children were properly secured.

No criminal charges have been filed, but they are still a possibility, police said.

The De Luna children attended classes in Whitesboro ISD, where counselors will be on hand all week for students and staff.
