Campaign aims to conquer cancer

The mayors of Dallas and Fort Worth are joining forces with the Dallas Mavericks and UT Southwestern to fight cancer.

“I bet there’s not a soul in this arena who hasn’t been touched by cancer at some point, including me and you,” Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price said.

“UT Southwestern has decided they’re going to step up and we’ve got to conquer this disease. So let’s do it,” added Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings.

Their “Conquering Cancer” awareness campaign offers information and screening for many common kinds of cancer such as breast, lung, colon and liver cancer.

Nationally, about 77 percent of women are screened for breast cancer. But in Texas, that number is only 68 percent.

“Screening is the mainstay of finding and preventing cancer. So we have many cancers now that we know that if we screen we can either detect it before it occurs or detect it early enough to make a difference in your lifestyle,” said Dr. Cecelia Brewington, a diagnostic radiologist at UT Southwestern.
