Some NFL owners want to force Jerry Jones out
DALLAS - Some fellow NFL owners are talking about forcing Jerry Jones to give up ownership of the Dallas Cowboys.
The league’s bylaws allow the commissioner to determine if an owner has been harmful to the league. The commissioner can force the owner to forfeit the franchise and sell the team to someone else.
Owners reportedly discussed it after Jones said he would sue to block a contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Jones reportedly told six owners that legal papers were ready to be served if a committee didn’t stop working on efforts to extend Goodell’s contract. A few days later, those owners kicked him off the compensation committee.
"I am very troubled by the swings that we've had," Jones said on his radio program on Oct. 31. "[Goodell’s] swing of judgment has been unbelievable from the Ray Rice thing all the way up to one or two games, all the way to the six-game suspension when you've truly got a debate. In our legal system it has to be stronger than that for somebody who has done it."
The NFL expects a five-year contract extension with Goodell to be finalized soon, despite Jones’ lawsuit threat.
