Woman's car damaged after man throws rock over Fort Worth bridge

FORT WORTH, Texas - A woman's quick instincts may have kept her safe when she saw a man standing on a bridge holding a large rock as she drove on I-30 in Fort Worth. Before she knew it, the rock had come into her car.

Erika Lewis is a hard working mom with a son and daughter.

“First thing I thought was oh my God. What if I’m not here for them?” she said.

Lewis was driving into work about 4 a.m. Monday morning and saw a man up on the Eastchase Bridge on I-30. She says he threw something that came crashing through her sunroof.

“When it came through, it sounded like an explosion came through the sunroof,” she recalled.

Lewis took a picture of the rock that landed behind her seat.

The case is at least the third case in ten days in North Texas of someone on an overpass throwing rocks at cars. Depending on the circumstances, police say it can turn into a serious crime with up to 10 years in jail.

Lewis’ van is in the shop being repaired. The sight still haunts her.

“Every time I close my eyes, that’s all I see is his hands going up and coming down,” she said. “You could tell whatever he had in his hands he tried to throw it with all his might.”

Lewis says she did try to get out of the way and that probably saved her.

“If I had not speeded up, I probably might not be here right now,” she said. “Pretty sure it would have went through my windshield.”

Fort Worth police are investigating, but so far have no other reports of other drivers who experienced anything similar in that area.

Lewis says although there was some traffic there were no other cars around her when this happened.
