Video shows suspected drunken driver slam into crash scene

Dash cam video captured the moment a suspected drunken driver crashed right into an accident scene in Richardson.

Victor Romero works for a car service. He said he installed a camera on his dash for liability reasons, but never expected to see what he saw early Friday morning.

Video shows a truck weaving in the northbound lanes of the Central Expressway. A few minutes later the truck slammed into a car that had pulled over to help after another crash near Spring Valley Road.

Police said the first accident happened after 49-year-old Eric Mack lost control of his Honda and was thrown from the vehicle.

One of Mack’s passengers was trapped in the overturned vehicle. Strangers stopped and struggled to rescue him, but once he was free he was hit in the second crash.

The driver of the truck, 40-year-old Jose Mendez, was charged with intoxicated driving.

Police said they do not yet know if Mack died from the first or the second crash.

Family members said Mack was a father of 11, including several stepchildren, from Plano.

“He lit up the room,” said Sophia Williams, his daughter. “It’s just something you can’t replace. This is a man that is truly going to be missed by so many people.”

His passenger is now home from the hospital, but still recovering from his injuries.
