TxDOT prepares for North Texas winter weather

The chance of snow flurries in North Texas has TxDOT crews treating bridges and overpasses with a brine solution.

The solution prevents ice from sticking to the road. TxDOT is prepared with nearly 150 vehicles and more than 200 people to respond to any problems on highways. TxDOT said it has been pre-treating area roads since Tuesday.

"If that ice gets on those bridge decks it's very difficult to remove and usually takes some sort of scraping to get that off so we take the pretreatment very seriously," said Val Lopez, TxDOT Fort Worth spokesman.

Along with the brine solution, TxDOT also has salt and de-icers it can use to treat problem areas.

An area of snow will streak across southern Oklahoma starting Thursday night. Counties along the Red River in Texas may see a small accumulation by Friday morning. The rest of North Texas may not see much Friday morning other than flurries, although a second disturbance in the afternoon may kick up some light snow well west of Fort Worth.

Temperatures will drop into the 20s overnight and wind chills are expected to be in the teens on Friday morning.

Both Dallas and Fort Worth ISD’s have already canceled soccer games and practice scheduled for Friday.
