Trump announces 'Stargate' initiative with AI data centers to be built in Texas

Texas will be home to a new joint venture that will make the state ground zero for the development of artificial intelligence in the United States.

What we know:

A new entity named Stargate was announced on Tuesday by President Donald Trump at the White House, along with Masayoshi Son of SoftBank, Sam Altman of OpenAI and Larry Ellison of Oracle.

It’s a partnership between the three tech companies, that have committed to investing as much as $500 billion to build more advanced artificial intelligence infrastructure.

What they're saying:

Trump said it will be the "largest AI infrastructure project, by far, in history."

He called it "a resounding declaration of confidence in America’s potential" since he won.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick criticizes crypto-miners, AI data centers for potential strain on Texas power grid

"We need to take a close look at those two industries. They produce very few jobs compared to the incredible demands they place on our grid… We want data centers, but it can’t be the wild, wild west of data centers and crypto miners crashing our grid and turning the lights off."

The other side:

While Trump has used similar announcements to show that his presidency is boosting the economy, there were already expectations of a massive buildout in data centers and electricity plants needed for the development of AI.

The first data center is already under construction in Abilene.
