Student hit, killed after getting off bus in Tampa
TAMPA (FOX 13) - A middle school student was hit after getting off the school bus in Tampa Thursday. He later died from his injuries.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says it happened sometime at 4:45 p.m. in the area of Orient Road and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
The student apparently got off the bus and tried to cross the road when he was hit and flung across the roadway. He was unconscious at the scene and pronounced deceased at Tampa General Hospital a short time later.
The driver of the vehicle that hit him stayed at the scene. It was unclear if the driver would be ticketed.
School bus No. 4590 was at the scene when FOX 13 News crews arrived several hours later.
The identity of the student was not released, pending family notifications. Neighbors say he went to Mann Middle School and lived just blocks from where he was hit.
Florida Highway Patrol was assisting with the investigation.
