Service held for victims of Lockhart hot air balloon crash

Sunday, July 30 marks the one year anniversary of the Lockhart hot air balloon crash. 

In 2016, a hot air balloon operated by Heart of Texas Hot Air Balloon Rides hit high-tension power lines before crashing into a pasture near the Central Texas town of Lockhart. 16 people were killed in the crash.

A remembrance service was held at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Maxwell to honor those who lost their lives. 

The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating what led up to the crash. The investigation team is looking into a number of factors, including the weather's role in the crash.

The NTSB is also looking into the rules and regulations for balloon pilots, including how much of their medical and criminal history they are required to disclose. Records show that the pilot of the hot air balloon had at least four drunken-driving convictions, two prison stays and more than 40 customer complaints in his past.

The final report and recommendations from the NTSB will be released later this year.
