Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in a Hurst neighborhood.

The trouble began around 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Arts Apartments in the 600 block of Arcadia Street. Officers were called to the complex for a domestic disturbance.

The suspect was gone by the time officers arrived, so they went looking for him.

Patrol cars drove up and down the streets and eventually police found 51-year-old James Dunaway near a home in the 1300 block of West Redbud Drive.

“The male ran into the backyard,” said Assistant Chief Steve Niekamp with the Hurst Police Department. “Officer chased him back there. The person did have a handgun and the officer fired and struck the suspect.”

The man was taken to JPS Hospital in Fort Worth and later pronounced dead.

Police have not yet released the name of the officer involved.

One person was in the home when the shooting happened, but it was not the homeowner.

"It was like, ‘Boom! Boom! Boom!’” said next door neighbor Merilynn Potter. “It was really fast, just rapid fire. My guess would be like about four [gunshots]."

Crime scene investigators returned to the backyard on Tuesday where the shots were fired.

Police said they were looking for shell casings and any other evidence they could find that can tell them more about the shooting.
