Christmas Eve is a time set aside for attending church services for many families in North Texas.

For Catholics, Protestants and Christians of all denominations — the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ began with evening services.

The Cathedral de Guadalupe in downtown Dallas had several masses scheduled for Monday night, with some in English and others in Spanish. Bishop Edward Burns was set to preside over a mass at 8 p.m. The 4 p.m. mass featured a children’s choir.

For many, Christmas Eve mass at the cathedral is a family tradition.

“Our whole family is here tonight so we’re very excited,” said Janet Lane.

For some it’s a new tradition.

“It is a new tradition for us,” said Judy Sutherland. “We just thought we’d do something different because we’re going to be home alone.”
