Muslims calling for federal involvement in hate crime investigation
Local Muslims are now calling for a federal investigation, after Dallas police classified a Christmas Eve shooting death as a hate crime. It happened at Omar's Tire Shop on South Buckner Boulevard.
The tire shop's owner, who is Muslim, says a man who identified himself as Jewish had come to the shop two weeks earlier, threatening to come back and kill all Muslims. Newly released surveillance video shows a man who police identify as 30-year-old Anthony Torres opening fire.
A customer, 25-year-old Enrique Garcia Mendoza was killed. An employee, 28-year-old Mahar Yousif was shot in the chest and is still hospitalized. Two other employees were grazed by a bullet.
The shop owner, who asked we not identify him said he's frustrated police didn't act two weeks ago when he first reported the threat. "If it was the opposite way it would be all over the news," the owner said. "People would be like, 'Oh, I'm listening to this! It was a terroristic act."
