Hometown Hero: Veterans Resource Center
Ken Watterson is a Marine veteran who served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was wounded there and knows the physical and emotional wounds of war. Watterson is proud to be a Marine and proud of his military service.
Watterson helped establish the Dallas - Fort Worth National Cemetery. Five years ago, he started the non-profit Veterans Resource Center, which serves homeless veterans.
It's all volunteer. Five and a half days a week, homeless veterans get two free meals a day, use laundry facilities and use the email center for job searches, file benefits, claims or contact family members.
Ken Watterson estimates there are 5,000 homeless vets in North Texas. He says they've seen things civilians can't imagine and unfortunately sometimes turn to drugs or alcohol to try and cope.
The Veterans Resource Center is here to help them. It's at 4900 S. Lancaster in Oak Cliff. If you'd like to donate items or volunteer call 214.372.8820 or go online to VeteransResourceCenter.org or HVSD.org
