Hometown Hero: LaCrondia Ellis Rhines

LaCrondia Ellis Rhines is a Senior Corporal with the Dallas Police Department.

In September 2015, the 27-year department veteran was diagnosed with breast cancer. After chemotherapy, radiation and three surgeries, she is now cancer free. For the second year, she's organizing a race team for the Dallas County Komen Race for the Cure.

Her teammates wear pink tutus. And because she's in law enforcement, fun pink handcuffs will dangle from their wrists like bracelets. LaCrondia's team has doubled to 45 members. She was married in July, and her husband Dwayne will take every race day step with her as he did during her breast cancer battle.

LaCrondia calls her friends the COLD Team – Cancer on Lockdown. She believes in early detection and urges women to do monthly breast self-exams and get a yearly mammogram at age 40 or earlier if there's a family history of breast cancer.

FOX4 will carry the Komen Dallas Race for the Cure live on October 28 from NorthPark center. To register, go to www.komen-dallas.org
