A Day Without Immigrants movement planned Monday nationwide

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - A movement aimed at demonstrating how vital immigrants are to the U.S. economy is planned for Monday in Minnesota and across the country.
What is the A Day Without Immigrants movement?

It's called A Day Without Immigrants, with the movement encouraging immigrants to refrain from going to work, school and shopping to highlight the essential role immigrants play in the economy and local communities.
The movement has been spreading on social media over the past several days. And now, many businesses nationwide are participating in solidarity with immigrant communities.
This comes amid President Donald Trump's first month back in office, and as he promises to crackdown on illegal immigration.
Minnesota businesses closing Monday for A Day Without Immigrants
Local perspective:
Some Minnesota businesses will be closed on Monday to mark A Day Without Immigrants.
The Minneapolis restaurant Barbette posted on social media Sunday that it would be closed Monday in observance of the day, saying "We stand in solidarity with our Mexican and Latino communities."
"No work. No shopping. No participation. We recognize and honor the invaluable contributions of immigrant workers and communities," the post adds.
The restaurant plans to reopen on Tuesday, and thanked patrons for their support.
La Costa Mexican Sports Bar and Grill will also be closed on Feb. 3, according to a social media post.
"Out of respect for the movement across the U.S. and to support our community, La Costa Mexian Restaurant will be completely closed on Feb. 3, 2025," the post said. "This decision is deeply meaningful to us as a business founded by immigrants. Today, many of our family members, staff, customers and friends share the same experience.
"We stand united in hope and solidarity, praying for meaningful immigration reform in the near future.
"This movement calls for immigrants to refrain from work, school and shopping to demonstrate the vital role immigrants play in the economy and the importance of advocating for change," the post concludes.
Book Club restaurant in Minneapolis is also closed on Monday in solidarity, a social media post said.
"We recognize and honor the invaluable contributions of immigrant workers and communities. Today, our doors remain closed as a sign of support and unity."
The restaurant will reopen on Tuesday.
A Day Without Immigrants held in 2017

A Day Without Immigrants was also held on Feb. 16, 2017, to send a message to President Trump in response to his pledges to crackdown on immigrants entering the United States.
That day, the boycott also called for immigrants not to attend work, open their businesses, spend money or even take their children to school.

On East Lake Street in Minneapolis alone, at least 14 businesses remained closed to mark the day.
