DART: Open carry will be allowed on buses and trains
DALLAS - Dallas Area Rapid Transit is trying to calm angry gun rights advocates.
It says a published memo was wrong to suggest police officers would stop and question anyone legally openly carrying a handgun. It becomes legal in Texas on Jan. 1.
DART said the person who wrote the memo was confused and that police will only be called to check out someone acting suspicious.
“If they are licensed and they got a good reason for it, I can understand with all the crime they got going on right now,” said Sharelle Sylvester, a DART rider.
“Yea, if they are a good citizen then I don’t have a concern. But you know, carrying a gun is very scary,” added Emmanuel Biar, another rider.
In a memo to workers, DART said bus and train operators should notify dispatchers when they see a rider carrying openly. DART police will decide whether to respond.
