Dallas police say a little boy was injured after someone fired a gun into a crowd at an apartment complex in Lake Highlands.

The incident happened at the Hidden Ridge Apartments on West Ferris Branch Boulevard Friday afternoon.

Witnesses say kids were coming home from school around 3:30p.m. when an adult started shooting in the parking lot between buildings at the apartment homes.

Witnesses told police a man initially involved in a physical fight shot into a crowd, hitting the child. They said another man fired back and injured the first gunman.

A neighbor who didn’t want her full name used heard the shots inside her apartment complex.

“When I took the pictures I was thinking about his mom. That's what I was thinking about to tell you the truth because I would want to know,” Angela said. “He was caught in the midst of some ignorance, yes, of some adults. And it's stupid.”

Angela says she believes the injured child is 8 years old. Police haven't confirmed an age.

During the investigation, police recovered a shotgun and at least one person taken away in handcuffs.

Police have not said if they've identified or talked to the second person who fired back.

Police said the child and the injured suspect, the man witnesses say fired first, were both taken to the hospital. They are both expected to survive.
