Dallas Mavericks surprise families by paying off their layaways

Christmas came early for 50 families in Dallas, Saturday, with the news that their layaways were paid.

The Dallas Mavericks surprised them at Burlington Coat Factory in the Red Bird area. It was in the midst of the holiday rush that each family got a call from the company, where they happened to have a layaway.
“I really don’t know why I’m here today, I got a phone call say come at 4, and I was on the way,” said Shatera Mullins.

Families were told to come in for a “customer appreciation event”, but it turned out to be much more than they imagined.

Dallas Mavericks stars Devin Harris and Dwight Powell surprised the crowd, announcing all those layaways had been paid off.

I was like ‘Oh, shoot,’” said Angelina Johnson, “that was real sweet, I was excited, I’m just real happy today, it was the greatest thing for them to think about us.”

“It’s important for us to give back in any way we can. First and foremost, that’s on the court and playing with our hearts and fighting for them, but just as equally as important is getting out in the community any chance we get, especially around the holiday season,” said Mavs player Dwight Powell.

This is the fourth year the team has done this. We’re told the layaways are paid off in part by the Mavericks along with anonymous donors.
