Crews battle high winds to extinguish apartment fire in Irving

Crews stopped a fire from spreading to another apartment building in Irving despite high winds.

The fire started just before midnight at The Crossing Apartments in the 2600 block of West Walnut Hill Lane.  The wind at the time made fighting the fire difficult for firefighters.

“It makes us be cautious on how we attack fires as it moves very quickly and unpredictably when the wind gets up like that,” said Assistant Fire Chief J. Taylor, with the Irving Fire Department.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control by 12:30 a.m., but one building was destroyed.

Everyone was able to escape and no one was hurt, but residents said it was a very scary situation. Sarai Orduna said the building appeared to be falling apart around her and the fire was everywhere.

The Red Cross of North Texas is now helping the 32 residents from the 13 apartments now displaced by the fire.
