Bullying continues after teen girl hangs herself
LOMA LINDA, Calif. (FOX 11) - A Riverside County family is in mourning after their 13-year-old daughter hanged herself following what they say was years of bullying.
FOX 11 spoke with parents Freddie and Charlene Avila who are preparing to take their daughter, Rosalie, off life support on Monday.
"I'm here today angry because my daughter is no longer with me and angry because of these bullies continuing to bully," says Freddie Avila.
Freddie says his daughter Rosalie hung herself and left a letter for him to find saying she couldn't take being bullied anymore.
But even after news spread that Rosalie committed suicide, the family says students still made fun of her, posting an image of her face near a grave online, mocking her death.
"It's so heartless, so mean to do that. And it's not funny, it's not funny to see that image of your daughter and to be mocked like she's crap and she's not. That's my daughter," says Charlene.
The family says they took their concerns to their daughter's middle school, but feel that not enough was done.
"Right now, the bullies are still there. They were suspended for a couple days and then they come back and bully someone else," Freddie says.
The family says dozens of people have contacted them saying their children are being bullied as well, especially on social media.
"The things that they post on social media about my daughter is unacceptable. The people that liked it and fed into it... it's painful and it makes me angry to know that they have no heart," says Charlene.
The Avilas tell victims to stand up for themselves and report bad behavior to adults. And to adults with kids guilty of pushing other students around, the Avilas say if you don't check your kids, you are the problem.
"You don't want to be in my shoes dealing with this and trying to figure out where your daughter is going to be buried," Charlene says.
