NEW YORK (AP) — Apple says preorders for its latest iPhone models were so strong that it expects it to surpass last year's record of selling more than 10 million phones during its first weekend on sale.

The company started taking preorders for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus on Saturday. The new models will go on sale at stores and online on Sept. 25.

Last year, Apple sold more than 10 million units of its previous model in the three days after they went on sale, a record for a new model.

Shares of Apple Inc., based in Cupertino, California, rose $2.01, or 1.8 percent, to $116.22 Monday.
