This isn't the first major fire to happen at the property. In 2018, a smaller fire erupted and injured three fighters and one resident.
Several units were destroyed in that fire.
What they're saying:
Residents who live in the complex said they woke up in a panic. Their stories are heartbreaking.
"I just got up to check what was going on and as soon as I came out I saw the smoke coming out of the vents. I just ran inside, got my kids and my husband out," Melissa Davidson said. "I just lost everything."
Chris Burnett
Chris Burnett says he was asleep on his first-floor unit when he heard the fire alarms.
"I got up, opened my door and the whole hallway was full of smoke, so all I could do was run out," Burnett said to FOX 4's Alex Boyer.
"My next step is to hit the lotto. I'm trying hard," Burnett laughed. "The other thing, I called my insurance. They're out here trying to help me out."
David Laffall
David Leffall was in his apartment for both this week's fire and the 2018 fire.
"It really breaks my heart because you think about those families who are without this morning. That’s home, you know."

The Dallas Fire Marshal is still working to determine the cause of the fire.

The American Red Cross has set up an evacuation shelter at the Lake Highlands YMCA at 8920 Stults Road in Dallas.
