2 drivers die in Kaufman County wrong-way crash

Two drivers were killed and two young girls were injured when a wrong-way driver hit another vehicle head on.

It happened Tuesday night near Crandall in Kaufman County. State troopers said two pickup trucks collided around 9:30 p.m. on FM 741, south of Interstate 20.

Investigators believe 29-year-old Leyva Cerda of Heartland had his lights off and was driving in the wrong direction. He died at the scene.

The driver of the other pickup, 36-year-old Kelly Jones of Crandall, also died. Her young daughter and another girl were taken to the hospital, but they were not seriously hurt.

The road was closed for more than three hours for an investigation.

Troopers are still trying to determine if alcohol was involved.
