$174 million expansion project begins at I-820 & Hwy 121

Another big construction project is about to begin in Fort Worth to help ease traffic congestion.

The $174 million project in northeast Tarrant County is expected to fix traffic troubles at Loop I-820 and Highway 121 interchange.

Maneuvering from 820 to 121 and back, you can't always get there without exiting one of the highways first and getting back on.

Fresh off the I-35 project, TxDOT is tackling this major source of congestion. The project will put ramps and a fly over where none exist right now. For now, you have to get off to get back on.

The area is a major commuting corridor for people who work in all corners of the metroplex. TxDOT says it began work this week on the project. For now, the work is being done at night.

As workers finish putting up construction barriers, traffic will be moved from the left lanes to the right side of the road.

Large sections of the two highway are two lanes in each direction. TxDOT says it will add at least one more lane on each side.

This project is expected to be completed in 2022.
