Tuesday’s match between France and Spain at Dallas Stadium could be one of the best of the 2026 World Cup.

Tuesday will be just the second time France and Spain have ever met at the World Cup. France won the lone showdown back in 2006 in a Round of 16 elimination match.

France’s star player Kylian Mbappe now leads the Golden Boot Race with eight goals and three assists. If he scores another goal in Arlington, he will tie Argentina’s Lionel Messi for the World Cup’s all-time scoring record.

France has won the World Cup twice. Both times, Didier Deschamps was a part of it. In 1998, he was a player captaining France to the title on home soil. And then in 2018, he was a manager when the team won in Russia.

But even Deschamps calls Spain the favorite to win on Tuesday. And heading into the matchup, Spain’s star player Lamine Yamal told reporters France should fear Spain.

The past two meetings have both ended in Spanish wins, with Spain prevailing in the 2024 Euro Semifinals before becoming the European champions. 

Yamal, who turned 19 years old in Dallas on Monday, said his birthday wish, of course, was to beat France and then win Spain’s second-ever World Cup.

France has won all six of its matches at this World Cup, outscoring opponents 16-2. But Spain has only allowed one goal in the games, meaning Tuesday’s 2 p.m. match should be a great one.
