Hyper-reality "Star Wars" movie experience opening in Plano

A theater in Plano is opening what it calls the first hyper-reality movie experience. It uses virtual reality gear to let you be a character in the movie.

FOX 4 News reporter Blake Hanson got a sneak peek of some of the things people are going to be able to do.

“I thought at first it is like virtual reality and it is something different. You smell it and feel it. I’m afraid of heights and I was afraid of heights inside of it. And it doesn’t hurt that it is ‘Star Wars’ as well,” he said.

The VOID is a whole-body, fully immersive VR experience. It will open Saturday at the Cinemark West Plano theater along the North Dallas Tollway.

“We’re excited about a lot of things but this Cinemark is the first exhibitor to launch an in-theater hyper-reality experience and we get to launch with ‘Star Wars: The Secrets of the Empire.’ It’s such a cool thing,” said James Meredith, a spokesman for Cinemark.

Meredith said Cinemark is always innovating and trying to find different ways to enhance the overall entertainment experience for guests.

“Where else can you come together with friends, suit up and then you get to be transported into a new galaxy as Storm Troopers. You get to walk around, untethered and fulfill a mission with your friends. It’s just a blast,” he said.

“And when you are getting shot you feel the vibration and it’s kind of a crazy experience,” Blake added.

The VOID is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets are $29.95 per person. All guests must sign a waiver and be at least 10 years old and 48 inches tall.
