Dallas weather: Polar plunge is here but for how long?

Even with the sun, we'll only get back above freezing for a few afternoon hours as the winds diminish. It's a dry forecast until Monday night, when some light snow or flurries are possible. Some accumulation is possible south of the metroplex.

Sunday Forecast: Freezing morning, chilling winds

What we know:

Wind chills were near 10 as the winds were strongest in the coldest part of the day on Sunday morning. Winds will diminish this afternoon as the sun helps us get above freezing from about 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Even with diminishing winds, chills will remain in the 20s.

As the winds die off and high pressure gets close tonight, we may be a few degrees colder by Monday morning with lows in the teens to near 20 as we get some passing clouds. Keep faucets dripping!

MLK Day Forecast: Freezing temps for most of the day

What we know:

MLK day Monday will feature lighter winds with partly sunny skies and temps again above freezing in the afternoon. Clouds will be on the increase later in the day as a disturbance drops through the Rockies and helps ignite a storm in the Gulf.

Our air will be too dry for any more than some light snow/flurries on Monday night, due to the very low temps and low moisture content.

What we don't know:

Anything that falls should just be fluffy and be easy to blow away. If we do see any accumulation (1") it would be well south from Waco to the Palestine line.

Tuesday Forecast: Possible Snow

What we know:

Whatever flakes we see will exit first thing Tuesday AM and clouds will turn to sunshine. Temps will remain very cold in the mid-30s one last day.

What we don't know:

Tuesday there is a shot that we could see very light flurry snow flakes, but right now we aren't expecting to see the heaviest of the snow. Right now, that appears to be south of our area toward Waco and south of Tyler.

We won't rule out a good dusting, but amounts should be under half an inch, and with temperatures as cold as they are road issues are not expected.

7-Day Forecast

What we know:

By mid-week, we start a warming trend as winds turn to the south and increase. Wednesday will be back into the 40s or possibly even close to 50 after one last frigid start.

A weak system will cruise through at night and exit Thursday with some clouds, but we have taken any precipitation chance out of the forecast. The air looks too dry.

That dry air will last through Friday with south winds again returning by afternoon to finally get temps back closer to "normal" in the mid 50s and going higher into Saturday as we crack 60.
