Jason Garrett: Cowboys united on anthem protest issue

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett says he believes his team is united on the issue of the national anthem protests.

During Thursday's press conference, neither Garrett nor any of the players would talk specifically about what Jerry Jones told them on Wednesday during a Wednesday team meeting.

Jones told reporters on Sunday he would bench players who do not stand and show respect during the national anthem. Up until now, none of the Cowboys have kneeled during the anthem.

However, during Sunday’s game, David Irving and Damontre Moore did raise their fists during the anthem. But neither player was disciplined, and it's still not clear if Jones would actually bench any of his star players.

But Garrett says the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting was positive.

“Yesterday's meeting was about Jerry stating his position, and I think it was well received,” the head coach said. “I think they understand that he has great respect for them, great love and admiration for them. And, again, yesterday's meeting was really productive for all of us. I do believe we're united on this.

Garrett says the Cowboys will continue to approach the national anthem like they’ve always had in the past.

Next week, the NFL owners will discuss whether to change the written guidelines and require players to stand for the national anthem.
