New footage released of Denton apartment floor collapse aftermath

Police body camera video released Thursday shows people running for their lives after a floor collapsed at a Denton apartment complex last weekend.

By some estimates, close to a 100 people were trying to get safety after the floor collapsed at a party in a third floor unit at the Ridge at North Texas Apartments.

"It was still unknown were there more collapses to come, was this over or was it gonna get worse,” said Denton PD Ofc. Bryan Cose.

The video shows officers trying to move the crowd back as firefighters used ladders to reach people trapped on the third floor. Witnesses recorded the scene inside the apartment, a gaping hole where the packed crowd once stood.

"They brought another ladder and placed it across the hole in the floor to allow people to allow people to walk across the ladder,” Cose said.

The safety threat extended all the way to the first floor. Police altered one of the videos to protect the resident's privacy as they went into a first floor unit to get people out. By then, Amber Hornik and her roommates had run outside.

Amber Hornik has now moved to a new complex and five days later her mother is still salvaging what she can.

"As far as the mess and devastation, sad we worked so hard to get the apartment homey for the girls and everything was functioning for them and we just did that in September,” mother Donna Hornik said.

The floor collapse broke water pipes soaking everything from the third floor to the first. Wet ceiling drywall is now on the floor.

“Wow, I'm surprised anybody survived from that,” Donna Hornik said.
