Local perspective:

In Allen, the temperatures outside did not cool off the celebration inside.

Mayor Baine Brooks said Allen residents must continue the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Dr. King once said, everybody can be great because everyone can serve. You only need a heart full of grace and soul to generate love," he said.

In Denton, about 100 people took part in a 9-minute mark outside to honor Dr. King’s legacy despite temperatures being in the 20s at the time.

MLK Day 2025: Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Service in Atlanta

As the nation recognizes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a traditional celebration will take place locally. The 2025 MLK Day Beloved Community Commemorative Service kicks off at 9 a.m. on Monday, and you can watch it live from home.

What they're saying:

"It’s pretty cold, but it’s alright. It’s a good occasion," said Cleveland Whiteside.

"I feel like as long as you bundle up correctly, you should be good," added Zoey Nelson.

The mayor of Denton said he was inspired by the number of young people participating in the march.

"If it's an older crowd, that’s great, but it’s a challenge to keep that energy going. Right? It takes a lot of work. To have a younger crowd here as engaged as they are is so inspiring for me as mayor.  And at some point, it’s looking forward to the growth of the city of Denton," Mayor Gerald Hudspeth said.

"Definitely worth it, for sure, to be out here because of what MLK stood for. And for us to embody that, that means everything. For us to be in college, it’s definitely a blessing. Just to be able to fulfill the promise he made, so definitely a blessing for sure to be out here," added Kameron Duckens.

"It’s important to represent history so that it shows back up so that we don’t forget where we came from. It’s really important. We can’t forget about that, regardless of if it's cold or not. They fought for the freedom we have now, so it’s only right we repay them," Victoria Tucker said.
