Man claims ex-wife's stabbing death was self-defense

A jury heard opening statements in the trial of a man accused of killing his ex-wife at her real estate office in north Fort Worth.

Police said John St. Angelo locked the door to Suzanne Parson's office then stabbed her to death in 2013. A day later he was arrested after a standoff with police.

In opening statements it was revealed the couple had known each other since childhood. They had a long emotional relationship and had grown apart in the end.

Prosecutors told jurors there is no doubt St. Angelo killed Parsons and there is no excuse or justification for what he did. But, defense attorneys argued otherwise.

"The story has not been told, but you're going to see this was clearly self-defense," said Kathy Lowthorp, a defense attorney.

St. Angelo also faces three counts of attempted capital murder for opening fire on Fort Worth SWAT officers during the standoff.
