Gas prices decrease across Texas for the first time since February

For the first time in nearly three months, the average price of a gallon of gas dropped across Texas.

AAA announced that the average gas price decreased two cents over the past week to $2.76. That price is 18 cents less than the average nationwide cost, which stands at $2.94. Last time the price dropped was in late February.

North Texas drivers are still paying a little bit more than most Texans. In Dallas, the average price was $2.83, down two cents from last week. Fort Worth saw the cost decrease by the same amount to $2.82.

Gas prices generally rise during the summer months, but a volatile oil market has caused the value of a barrel of crude oil to drop since May, leading to slightly lower costs at the pumps. Still, the price of a gallon of fuel is 57 cents more than it was at this time last summer and Texans shouldn’t count on prices returning to 2017 levels.

"While gas prices are likely to remain above last year's price levels throughout the summer, many Texans are enjoying at least minor relief when filling up this week," AAA spokesman Daniel Armbruster said in a statement.  

According to AAA, the highest price for a gallon of gas in the state is in Midland, where drivers are paying an average of $3.10. Brownsville and Harlingen are paying $2.63 per gallon – good for the lowest in the state.
